Canine Enrichment

What is canine enrichment?

Canine enrichment is your dog satisfying his mental and physical needs.

Your dog can mentally exercise by sniffing, digging, chewing, playing, searching, and chasing!

Much like ourselves, mental stimulation with a balance of physical exercise is the key to a happy & healthy canine companion.

Why is canine enrichment so important?

Canine enrichment plays a huge roll in our training programs, dogs who are not mentally exercised tend to find ways to keep themselves entertained and this leads to unwanted behaviours.

Yes, it is true! A tired dog is a good dog.

Dogs who work their brains are also much more eager to learn, this makes training a whole lot easier!

Keeping your dog busy by giving him games, activities, and exercise will help aid in training and keep him out of trouble.

What can you do to provide your dog with a life full of enrichment?

There are a ton of games, puzzles, and toys on the market to keep your dog busy & happy at home!

Feel free to ask your trainer for an opinion on which activity is the best fit for your dog.

To get you started, here are some popular toys on the market that we highly recommend and use with our own dogs!

  • Snuffle Mats

Snuffle mats can be home made if you are working with a budget. They are also sold online and in stores! Throw some of your dogs kibble or treats in this mat and let them explore!

  • Kongs

Kong makes many popular canine enrichment toys. The traditional kong can be stuffed with peanut butter, cheese, or treats. Try freezing the kong t.o make it last longer.

  • Treat Dispensing Toys

The Omega Tricky Treat Ball is a easy treat dispensing toy to get your dog starting to work for his/her food!

  • Puzzle Feeders

Outward Hound makes many different levels of puzzle feeders, for the dogs who are just learning and for the dogs who are mastering their skills.
